Moses’ first request to Pharaoh is for a “three-day journey into the wilderness” to worship God. Lent is our “three-day journey” (expanded to forty). Ash Wednesday is the border crossing. We tell the “Pharaohs” of our lives—the voices of productivity, perfectionism, and greed—that we are leaving for a while to go worship in the desert.

Lent is traditionally a season of repentance. What if the key to true repentance is less about focusing on our moral failures and more about a change in mindset – from the Egyptian mindset to a whole new way of thinking. What if we need to turn away from the fear that there isn’t enough, turn away from the idea that our worth is tied to how many “bricks” we make, and turn away from our need to be in control.
